Frankincense: The Choice Incense Frankincense trees have a distinct gnarly and rough appearance, and in accordance with this they grow in rocky, dry soil. Of the twenty-five types of frankincense that used to be available, only about three are now known and available on the market. Frankincense is an archaic term for “choice incense.” Frankincense and myrrh are two classical incenses that are among the most used and included in several spirituals traditions. Frankincense and myrrh are also thought of as companions, and are often burned together. Along with this symbolism, frankincense is thought of as providing male energy, and myrrh the female. In classical times frankincense resin was as valuable as gold. Frankincense is often thought of in terms of Christian spirituality, since it was brought as a gift to baby Jesus by the Magi Kings, was one of the eight pleasing fragrances of Moses, and is mentioned in the Bible many times. Still today it is used in Roman Catholic worship, as well as in other religions throughout the world.
